Derikaryong Pada Sugidanon (Epics) of Panay Book 3

The most beautiful maiden of her time blooms to full maturity and waits for the fulfillment of the tuos (the promise of having one’s daughter married to someone’s son), which is the hungaw—the traditional wedding. She is given the glittering derikaryong pada, a most expensive bride gift whose value is unequalled in the epic world. A most beautiful celebration is expected for such a lovely bride. But as the groom remains unprepared, the bride is given in marriage to another man. The maiden suffers through many episodes of anguish and turmoil until a difficult conflict is finally resolved.

Federico “Tuohan” Caballero
Birth: December 25, 1938
Federico Caballero was born seventy-six years ago near the stream of the river Pan-ay at the border of Masaroy, Calinog, and Tapaz, Capiz. A Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) Awardee for the year 2000, he comes from a long family line of epic chanters. Such exposures harnessed his skill and love for epic chanting (sugidanun) at an early age. In SY 2000–2001, together with Dr. Alicia P. Magos, he helped pioneer the first School for Living Tradition (SLT) in the Visayas located in Barangay Garangan, on the border of Tapaz, Capiz, and Calinog, Iloilo. In that informal weekend schooling, he is helped by his siblings and relatives in teaching epic chanting together with the other arts.

Romulo “Amang Baoy” Caballero
Romulo Caballero (a.k.a. Amang Baoy) is the third brother after Federico Caballero and the mainstay at the Balay Turun-an, the first School for Living Tradition (SLT) in the Visayas located in Brgy. Garangan, Calinog, Iloilo. He is a versatile artist that he can chant and perform as well using different Panay Bukidnon instruments. He has performed at the Cultural center of the Philippines (CCP) in 2013. He also won the Indigenous Leadership Award in the Philippines, given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2004, for his dedication in propagating the Panay Bukidnon Culture.

Alicia P. Magos
Professor Emeritus, UP Visayas
Dr. Magos, a sociocultural anthropologist by profession started work on the epics almost twenty-five years ago. Her interest in the indigenous people started with her early exposure on their Negrito workers and later on the mountain dwellers of Central Panay—the Panay Bukidnon—in 1992. Her long mountain treks on the rugged mountains of Panay started in 1988. She is also a multi-awarded professor and now Professor Emeritus.
