ABOUT THE BOOK

The authors offer us a chronicle filled with the voices and perspectives of the UP community, campus residents, observers, critics, and supporters. We are treated to a wonderful retelling of both personal and official stories (with photos!) of academic life and campus culture in different UP units. At the core of this narrative lies the enduring theme of academic freedom. We witness its various interpretations and applications, underscoring UP’s commitment to intellectual inquiry and engagement with the nation. This volume explores the trials and triumphs of a university grappling with its role as both a state university and a vanguard of social change through the tumultuous years of Martial Law.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rosario Cruz-Lucero is a retired professor of Philippine literature, comparative literature, and creative writing at the UP Diliman, where she obtained her AB in English and Comparative Literature, and her MA and PhD in Philippine Studies. She has published books of fiction, history, and personal essays as well as a book of critical essays on the literature and culture of the Visayas and Mindanao. She has won a number of Palanca awards for the short story and the essay, National Book Awards from the Manila Critics Circle, Free Press Literary Awards, the Nick Joaquin Literary Award, and the UP Chancellor’s Award. She has received fellowships for postdoctoral courses and creative writing from the British Council, Fulbright, Ford Foundation, and Asia Foundation.

Katrina Tuvera graduated from the UP with a BA in art history and an MA in creative writing. She teaches creative writing at the De La Salle University, where she earned her PhD in literature. She has written two novels and a short story collection, and co-edited two anthologies of Philippine literature. Her work has won the Palanca and Philippine Graphic awards, as well as National Book Awards. She has received fellowships from the MacDowell Foundation, Hawthornden Foundation, Bogliasco Foundation, Hedgebrook, and Fondation Heinrich & Jane Ledig-Rowohlt. Her latest novel, The Collaborators, was published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press in 2022.
