The Philippines is in a unique place when it comes to stories of crime, mystery, and suspense. Where other countries exhibit more sophistication in their crime investigation and judicial system, it is a common perception that justice remains elusive for most crime victims in the Philippines unless one is moneyed or well-connected. This makes for a nuanced and differing exploration from the usual tidy resolutions of offerings of these genres from other countries, seen through the eyes of Filipino young adults.

Crime, Mystery, and Suspense is the fourth in the Filipino Fiction for Young Adults series, following Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy.

ABOUT THE EDITORS

Dean Francis Alfar is a fictionist, playwright, and advocate of speculative fiction. His literary awards include ten Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature as well as the National Book Awards, the Philippines Free Press Literary Award, and the Gintong Aklat Award. He is the chair of the Filipino Critics Circle. His books include the novel “Salamanca”, the collections “The Kite of Stars”, “How to Traverse Terra Incognita”, “A Field Guide to the Roads of Manila”, “Moon Sun Stars: Selected Stories”, and the children’s books “How Rosang Taba Won a Race” and “Poor, Poor Luisa”.

Kenneth Yu is a reading advocate and the publisher/editor of The Digest of Philippine Genre Stories, a Filipino short-fiction publication of genre tales (science fiction, horror, crime, mystery, suspense, and fantasy). The digest has evolved from its original print form and now has an online presence at philippinegenrestories.com. His own work has been published both locally and internationally. He is the author of two collections, “Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing” and “The Greatest Fight of Sunny Granada and Other Stories”.
