Manong: The Life and Works of Gerardo de Leon is the first compre hensive study of the life and works of National Artist for Film Gerardo de Leon (GDL). After describing GDL’s personal and artistic back ground, the book presents the complete production data as well as the sources, synopses, dates of release, promotion, and critics’ analyses of each of the more than 82 films he did from 1938 to 1976 for Parlatone Hispano-Filipino and others before the war, the Eiga Haikyusa during the war, Sampaguita Pictures from 1946 to 1947, Premiere Productions from 1948 to the early 1960s, and the independent companies, local and international, from the late 1950s to 1976. The last chapters analyze the themes and visual style of GDL’s films as well as his legacy to the Philippine cinema and nation. A filmography and other documents end the study.
