ABOUT THE BOOK

The work documents the life of gainfully employed women in the nineteenth century. Seven occupations of women were studied— namely, the cigarreras (tobacco factory workers), the matronas titulares (licensed midwives), the maestras (teachers), the criadas (female domestic workers), the tenderas and vendedoras (store owners and vendors), the costureras and bordadoras (seamstresses and embroiderers), and the mujeres públicas (prostitutes).

With women often absent or marginalized in the pages of history, the study attempts to unravel, through archival sources and other nondocumentary sources like literature and iconography, the life of these working women. Despite the meager archival materials on women, and more specifically working women, this study prides itself in having used primary sources to document working Filipino women during the Spanish period.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ma. Luisa T. Camagay is a professor emeritus in the Department of History, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Diliman. She also served as chairperson of the said department. She obtained her Doctorat de Troisieme Cycle at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France. A prolific researcher, Camagay has written numerous articles exploring various issues in Philippine social history. Her earlier publication Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Maynila (1765-1898) and the first edition of the Working Women of Manila in the 19th Century won the National Book Awards in the category of history given by the Manila Critics Circle in 1993 and 1995, respectively.
