ABOUT THE BOOK

This book is a fitting follow-up to the initial edition of the animal breeding book made available since 2008 for Filipino teachers, students, practitioners, and technical consultants working on animal improvement. Based on his many years of experience and research, the scholarly breeding principles Dr. Bondoc offers are appropriate to the contemporary needs of the livestock and poultry industry, especially with regard to the advancing fields of statistics and computing, reproductive biotechnologies, and genomic selection. He expounds on the relevance and practical applications of animal breeding in a Philippine (tropical) setting, which includes our local or native breeds suitable for organic livestock production systems. Dr. Bondoc also includes a glossary and updated bibliography on the significant milestones and local practices in quantitative genetics, statistical methodology, selection, mating designs, and animal biotechnologies applied in animal breeding.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Orville Ledesma Bondoc is a professor of animal breeding at the Institute of Animal Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Laguna. He graduated from UPLB with a BSc in Agriculture and an MSc in Animal Science in 1983 and 1987, respectively. In 1991, he obtained a PhD degree in animal breeding/genetics from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Bondoc served as an animal breeding/genetics consultant to leading breeding farms and government agencies in the country, including dairy cattle, beef cattle, buffalo, goats, swine, and game fowls.
